Florida Conservatives for Coastal Preservation

Mentiroso Avila

Senator Bryan Avila, rising ‘star’ of the Tallahassee insider “pay to play” crowd, continues to lie through his teeth at State of Florida legislative hearings with nobody correcting him, in regard to his “Safe Structures” bill – written by developer lobbyists and widely opposed by towns across Florida for its potential to destroy much of Florida’s historic coastal heritage and let developers destroy our waterfront.

–> Check out the expose from Forbes about this developer-funded attempt to destroy Florida’s coastal communities.

Lie #1: Avila claims:

“One of our cities, Miami Beach, (has) seven structures that are deemed historic (on the National Register of Historic Places). The local historic board has deemed 2,600 structures to be historic,” he said. “There’s a clear discrepancy there … because not everything can be historic.”

FACT #1: Miami Beach has 2,200 structures on the National Register of Historic Places – not seven! These districts comprise approximately 2,200 buildings registered at the federal level, with approximately 1,832 registered as contributing to the district.

Lie #2: Avila claims that Miami Beach voters, in 2012, voted by a 61% margin to reduce the powers of the Historic Preservation Board. He claims this is a sign that even Miami Beach residents don’t like Historic Preservation.

FACT #2: Voters by a 61% margin instituted a charter amendment in 2012 that requires voter approval to reduce the powers of the Historic Preservation Board, thereby strengthening the board’s powers. Here are the results:

We are sick and tired of Senator Avila’s untruthful efforts to get SB1526 passed for his lobbyist/developer friends. Shame on him!

Tell Mentirosa Avila to stop lying!
